The place
One community, three counties
The Villages is a census-designated place, not a city, and it spreads across three counties: Sumter, Lake and Marion. It began in the early 1970s as Orange Blossom Gardens, a mobile home park in northwestern Lake County, and took its present name in 1992. Growth since then has been fast. The census counted 8,333 residents in 2000, 51,442 in 2010 and 79,077 in 2020.
It is built for retirement. At least 80% of homes must have a resident aged 55 or older, and in 2020 the median age was 73. Most of the community is run by community development districts, 17 of them for the residential areas, alongside two homeowners' associations.
That mix of counties matters more than you might think when you book. A Villages address can sit in Sumter County one street and Lake County the next. We do not need you to know which; we need the full street address and the village name.
ZIP codes
The Villages' three ZIP codes
From the Census Bureau's 2020 ZIP code areas. Each also covers land outside The Villages, so a matching ZIP is not proof an address is inside the community.
| ZIP code | Share of the ZIP's land in The Villages |
|---|---|
| 32162 | About 94%, the core of the community |
| 32163 | About 39%; about half of this ZIP's land is in the City of Wildwood |
| 32159 | About 12%; this is also the ZIP code of almost all of the Town of Lady Lake |
Getting there
How we get to you from Orlando
The community is bounded by US 27/441 on the east, US 301 on the west, CR 42 on the north and CR 470 on the south. From Orlando, the Turnpike is the usual way up.
Florida's Turnpike
North from Orlando past Leesburg. The exits for The Villages are 296 at CR 470, 304 at US 301 and 307 at SR 44, and the Turnpike ends at I-75 near Wildwood. It has been cashless since 2021.
US 27/441
The eastern edge, through Lady Lake and south toward Leesburg. The community started near here, as Orange Blossom Gardens in northwestern Lake County.
State Road 44
The east-west road through the southern part of the community, crossed by the Chitty Chatty and Brownwood golf-cart bridges, both opened in late 2020.
Private roads and cart paths
About 750 miles of the roads here were private as of 2018, the latest count we found. Golf carts also cross the Turnpike on the Water Lily and Southern Oaks bridges, opened in 2021 and 2023.
The drive is part of our day, not yours. Book online as you would in Orlando, and we plan the trip.
At home
Garage installs in The Villages
Most installs in The Villages happen at home. A few things make the visit go well.
- The garage is the best place for the job. Clear room at the front of the car and on both sides so the doors open fully.
- If a golf cart shares the garage, move it out for the visit so the technician can reach both front pillars.
- Give the village name, the street address and the nearest town square or recreation center as a landmark.
- If your community has rules about vendors or work vehicles, tell us when you book.
- If you would rather not be home, say so. Someone with the keys still has to open the car and approve the work, so ask a neighbor or family member to be there.
We do not install in rain. A garage install usually goes ahead even when an afternoon shower is passing through.
Coming and going
Booking around summers up north
If you split the year between Florida and somewhere cooler and a crack shows up in spring, book the replacement before you leave rather than after a summer in a hot garage, where a small crack can keep growing. If you come back in the fall and find the windshield damaged in storage, book it then; there is no rush to drive a car that has been sitting.
If you are driving north in the car, a new windshield before a long interstate trip is worth planning. You can book online at any hour, and same-day appointments are available in most areas, though The Villages is a longer trip for us, so a little notice helps.
Paying for it
Insurance and newer cars
On a Florida policy with comprehensive coverage, the windshield can have $0 Deductible with Comprehensive Coverage. Door, back and sunroof glass take your normal deductible. We check your policy before we book and help you file your claim; the Florida insurance page has the details.
Many newer cars have a camera behind the mirror for lane keeping or automatic braking. After a new windshield goes in, that camera is calibrated. Calibration is included with the windshield replacement when your car needs it, and a level garage floor is often a good place for it.
